Shirly Bar-Amotz

Born in Israel, 1974

Shirly Bar-Amotz uses a variety of materials to create narrative jewelry and objects. Her concepts are sometimes driven from the materials themselves and from various craft processes. She creates a fascinating dialogue between precious and non-precious materials with combinations such as plastic, porcelain, rubber, gold silver and enamel often found in one piece.

Cultural strata, the political context, and Israel's reality as seen through her eyes, are all reflected in her works.

Shirly is a lecturer at the Jewelry and Fashion Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem (Since 2001). She holds a BFA (1999), and an MFA (2005) - from the Jewelry Department at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.

Her works have been exhibited internationally and included in the permanent collections of the Tel Aviv museum of Art, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and other private collections.

She has been awarded several prizes including The prestigious Andy Prize for Contemporary Crafts (2012), the Ministry of Science, British Council BI Arts Grant for studies abroad (2002), and Culture and Sport Award for Design, Israel (2007).

Shirly presented a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2012), at Gallery Loupe for Contemporary Art Jewelry (2013), New York, and at the Munich jewelry week (2018). She gave artist talks at Brooklyn metal work, at Y92, New York, and at the Cass School of Art and Design in London.

Jump’, series, 2018

The relationship between dogs and humans goes back a long way. Humans begun domesticating dog’s, tens of thousands of years ago. In the process of domestication, humans mainly tried to reinforce qualities such as loyalty and empathy. In contrast, in this work the images of assault dogs, trained to serve in combat situations. In many of the images, the assault dogs and the trainer become one body, a hybrid of a man and animal.

The pendant combines the images of two assault dogs and one man turning into a single, aggressive and violent figure.

The pendant and necklace were fused together by using melted black rubber.
